Emerging Playwrights Honored at Festival

July 03, 2018

Join us at the Potrero July 20-29 for the 2018 Bay Area Playwrights Festival (BAPF). This nationally-acclaimed festival showcases six exceptional playwrights and their plays, with 12 staged readings, a Theater Professionals weekend, additional special events and a kickoff fundraiser on July 15. The six selected plays are “Colonialism is Terrible, but Pho is Delicious” by Dustin Chinn, “The Daughters” by Patricia Cotter, “House of Joy” by Madhuri Shekar, “Suspension” by Kristiana Rae Colón, “VRTU-L” by T.D. Mitchell, and “When Lighting the Voids” by Jon Bernson. Over 700 nationwide submissions from promising playwrights were considered before the final selection.

Of the six chosen plays, the range shifts from playfulness and humor to pathos and tragedy, as the playwrights delve into shifting worlds, crucial moments in history and in the future, and the differences of both perception and perspective. Themes include a group of high-school girls in a future dystopian setting, female bodyguards in the 17th century Mughal Empire, lesbian social spaces, increasing use of technology in war, the consequences of deregulation, and turning points in colonialism via Vietnam’s favorite soup.
